Free Hispanic Heritage Month coffee hour, 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the Latin American Association on Buford Highway: dances, a salsa lesson and food. Register first.

The City of Brookhaven and the Latin American Association are holding a free Hispanic Heritage Month event next week. “Celebrating our Roots Coffee Hour” runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. It takes place at the association’s offices, 2750 Buford Highway NE.

Space is limited and registration is required, the city said in its announcement on Monday.

What is planned

The city and the association list:

  • a cultural program of traditional dances from several Latin American countries
  • a salsa lesson from a dance instructor
  • a chance to practice English and Spanish with other guests
  • food from Yuli’s Bakery LLC, run by a graduate of the association’s Avanzando Juntas program, which helps women start and run small businesses

“Our Coffee Hour will give participants an opportunity to practice English and Spanish while meeting and connecting with others,” said Santiago Marquez, the association’s CEO.

Council member Michael Diaz was born in Colombia and is Brookhaven’s first Latino elected official, according to the city. “Brookhaven is made stronger by the many cultures of our residents,” he said.

National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, so the event falls on the second-to-last day.
